Danxia Mountain

Danxia Mountain is located in the Danxia town, which is 20 kilometers away from the south of Shuangfeng town. With an elevation of 1888 meters, Danxia Mountain is the tallest in this area with great view. On the top of the mountain, there is a Huguo Temple built during the reign of Emperor Wanli in the Ming dynasty.

In 1638 (Chongzhen 11th year in Ming Dynasty), the famous geographer and explorer Xu Xiake came to visit Danxia Mountain. He explored mountains, rivers, humanity culture, transportation etc in this area with the company of Great Master Ying Xiu, and wrote all the discoveries down into his Travels of Xu Xiake. His visit made Danxia Mountain more famous around the country.

 In the Gokokuji Temple, you can see buildings like Shan Men, the Mahavira Hall, Jade Buddha Hall, Avalokitesvara Hall, Thousand-Hand Kwan-yin Hall and Abstinence Hall and so on. In the Gokokuji Temple, besides the imperial antique endowed by Emperor GuangXu, there is a temple treasure–the Pattra-leaf Scriptures. It is said that there are only four Pattra-leaf Scriptures in mainland China, however two of which are well preserved and collected in this temple. There are plaques, couplets, paintings and calligraphies written by Zhao Yijiong and Weng Tong. There are also jade Buddha, gold Maitreya, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, Thousand-Hand Kwan-yin and several kinds of Buddhist treasures. Plaques like “Danxia Shan”, “Huguo Si”, “Da Xiong Bao Dian” were written by President of Chinese Buddhist Association Mr. Zhao Puchu.

 With long history, Danxia Mountain is not only highly worthy of visiting but also full of cultural value. It is also on the list of tourist musts of Buddhist.
